Hello

Hello, I am Eleni. A play therapist, based in Tayside. I work with children and the adults in their lives, to help connect in more playful and harmonious ways. To this work I bring a variety of studies and professional experiences, together with many wise learnings that children, their adults, and my colleagues have taught me over the years.

playful minds Dundee is a service as flexible and affordable as possible. I collaborate with local charities and schools to offer individual play therapy, as well as group sessions for children and for families. Also, in development, are workshops for parents, caregivers, and childhood professionals. For more details, please read the Services section.

‘brain at play’ is the title of the artwork on the header. It is a collaborative piece, created together with a colleague in a playful moment of our therapeutic play training.

About

Play is my work since 2005, when I completed an HNC in Early Education and Child Care at Dundee College. In 2017 I qualified with a Postgraduate Certificate in Therapeutic Play Skills, and recently with a Postgraduate Diploma in Play Therapy, from the Academy of Play and Child Psychotherapy. Between 2020-22 I attended the Foundation and Intermediate training in systemic therapy with the Family Therapy Training Network. I have also undertaken shorter training courses in the arts therapies, dramatherapy, filial play, childhood trauma. I am registered with PTUK, AFT, ICO and Disclosure Scotland.

Originally from Greece, I have lived and worked with children and their families in East Scotland for about twenty years. I have worked, and played, with hundreds of babies, children, young people, their families, and the professionals around them. In education, in playwork, in kinship and foster care, indoors and outdoors, in a variety of settings.

My therapeutic approach is child-led and person-centred, working with the belief that each person knows better what is right for them, that each one of us will strive for personal growth if we are given a safe space and an understanding collaborator. The same non-judgemental, non-expert approach I apply to my work with families. Even when I work with individuals, I offer a systemic view, considering the bigger picture of the person’s ‘world’ and close relationships.

I take a trauma-informed perspective, looking behind troublesome behaviours, and seeing troubled individuals and unhelpful ways of communication. Therapeutic work can help children experiment, express themselves, and find their ‘voice’ through play. With playful minds Dundee my hope is to join the effort of truly listening to children, in their many languages of play and creativity.

Services

Below is a brief introduction of the services I can offer. To explore the possibilities of working together, please get in touch using the contact form.

play therapy – One to one sessions, using the ‘language’ of play, with children who show behaviours of concern, or have experienced distressing life events.

Play therapy invites the individual to work through what troubles them at their own pace. There is a variety of materials to choose from, such as arts and crafts, clay, sandtray, musical instruments, puppets, dressing up, small world play, storytelling.

small group work – For some children it is more helpful to work together with their peers who are experiencing similar worries, like a bereavement or friendships troubles.

family sessions – Working together with the family to explore difficulties and build on strengths, with the use of a systemic therapy approach. Systemic thinking can help the members of a family, or other group, gain better insight into each other’s views, and navigate changes in family life.

Using creative activities, we will explore different ways of communicating for more harmonious interactions. Although these are not therapy sessions, they are playful and therapeutically oriented.

Family sessions may be combined with one to one play therapy.

workshops, in development – A range of workshops for parents, caregivers and professionals, looking at the therapeutic potential of play and playfulness throughout the lifespan, and how to apply it in everyday interactions.
